Short answer

A mala is a string of 108 prayer beads with one larger guru bead. You move one bead for each mantra, so a full round is 108 recitations. Choose a mala by the colour and stone you will want to hold every day. Each set here gives you two pieces: the full 108 bead mala and a matching bracelet. Malas are used in both Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu practice.

How to choose prayer beads

Choice Pick this Reason
Type 108 bead mala The full mala, for counting a complete round of mantras in seated practice.
Type Bracelet A short string for the wrist, for a few quiet repetitions during the day.
Type The set Every listing here includes both, in the same stone.
Colour Blue and green Lapis lazuli, amazonite or green onyx.
Colour Yellow and gold Yellow jade, yellow calcite or tiger eye.
Colour Black or white Lava stone or howlite.
Finish Polished or matte Polished beads slide easily through the fingers. Matte beads have more grip.

How to use a mala

  1. Hold the mala in one hand. In Tibetan Buddhist practice this is usually the left hand. In Hindu practice it is usually the right. Follow your own tradition.
  2. Start beside the guru bead. Begin at the first bead next to the larger guru bead.
  3. One mantra, one bead. Say your mantra once, then draw the next bead toward you with your thumb.
  4. Go all the way round. When you reach the guru bead again, you have completed 108 repetitions.
  5. Do not cross the guru bead. For another round, turn the mala around and go back the way you came.
  6. Keep it with care. When you finish, keep the mala in a clean place, off the floor.

What a mala means

A mala is a tool for counting, and its meaning comes from the mantra you say with it. In Tibetan Buddhist practice the mantra is often Om Mani Padme Hum. The number 108 is held sacred in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. You may read that particular stones bring particular benefits. Those are beliefs, and we do not make healing claims for any stone.

Prayer beads: common questions

What are prayer beads?

Prayer beads, called a mala, are a string of beads used to count mantra recitations. One bead is moved for each repetition, so the mind can stay on the mantra and not on the counting. Malas are used in both Buddhist and Hindu practice.

Why does a mala have 108 beads?

108 is a sacred number in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, and different teachers give different reasons for it. In practice it means one full round of the mala is 108 repetitions of a mantra.

What is the guru bead?

The guru bead is the single larger bead where the two ends of the mala meet. It marks the start and the end of a round. It is not counted, and by custom you do not pass over it.

How do you use a mala?

Start at the bead next to the guru bead. Say your mantra once, then draw the next bead toward you with your thumb. Continue bead by bead until you return to the guru bead. For another round, turn the mala around and go back the way you came.

Which hand do you hold a mala in?

It depends on the tradition. In Tibetan Buddhist practice the mala is usually held in the left hand. In Hindu practice it is usually held in the right hand. Follow your own tradition or teacher.

Can I wear a mala as a necklace or bracelet?

Many people do. Customs differ between traditions, so follow your own. However you carry it, a mala is a devotional object, so it is kept clean and off the floor.

What comes in each set?

Each set has one full mala of 108 beads and one matching bracelet. The mala is for seated practice, and the bracelet is for carrying with you through the day.

Which stone should I choose?

Choose the colour and stone that you are drawn to and will want to hold every day. We do not make healing claims for stones. The meaning of a mala comes from the practice you do with it.

Are your prayer beads handmade in Nepal?

Yes. Our mala and bracelet sets are strung by hand in Nepal.

How long does dispatch take?

Prayer beads are dispatched in 3-4 business days from Kathmandu by DHL Express.
