Why this is the right first singing bowl

Most guides tell beginners to buy the cheapest thing on a marketplace and upgrade later. We think that is bad advice, and it is why so many first bowls end up in a cupboard. A poorly made bowl is hard to play. It chirps and skips on the rim, it needs too much pressure to start singing, and the sound dies before you have settled. People conclude they are bad at it. They are not. The bowl is.

A good hand-cast bowl solves that, because casting gives an even wall all the way round. The bowl responds the same at any point on the rim, starts singing with light pressure and keeps going. That predictability is what you want while you are learning.

What we suggest for a beginner singing bowl:

• Around 4 to 6 inches. Big enough for a satisfying tone, small enough to hold in the palm while you learn the circular motion.
• A plain or lightly decorated bowl to begin with. Heavily embossed surfaces are beautiful, but the raised relief changes how the mallet travels. They are easier once your technique has settled.
• Wooden mallet first. Start with the wooden end, not the suede, which needs more practice to keep singing.
• Do not buy for the chakra note yet. For a first bowl, choose the one whose sound you like.

Why these make good singing bowl gifts

A singing bowl is one of the few objects that is both beautiful on a shelf and useful, which is why it is given so often. The trouble with the ones sold as gifts on marketplaces is that they are anonymous: the same bowl, in the same box, sent to thousands of people.

Four things make these different:

• Free engraving. A name, a date, a message or a mantra, in English or Tibetan script, cut by hand at no extra cost. This turns a nice object into a personalised gift meant for one person.
• A colour and symbol you choose. Hand-painted bowls in bright colours, or raised bronze relief in Buddha, Green Tara, Ganesha, Ashtamangala or Om.
• A complete gift set. A mallet and cushion come with the bowl, so it can be played the moment it is opened.
• Something to learn from. The free healing course means the gift does not stop at the object.

Common occasions: a housewarming, where an Ashtamangala bowl is the traditional Himalayan choice. A wedding or anniversary, with the date engraved. A graduation or new job, with a name and year. A teacher's gift with a dedication. A memorial, where a bowl that makes a sound is gentler than a plaque. Ganesha bowls are the usual choice for a new venture.

What a hand-cast singing bowl is, and what it is not

Sellers tend to be vague about this, so here it is straight. Hand-casting means molten bronze alloy is poured by hand into a mould, left to cool, then cut free, turned, ground and polished by hand. It is hand work from start to finish. It is not the same as a machine-pressed or spun brass bowl, which is stamped out of sheet metal in seconds and is what most cheap marketplace bowls are.

Compared with a hand-hammered bowl, a cast bowl has an even wall, which gives a clear, steady tone with a strong fundamental and fewer overtones. A hand-hammered bowl has walls that vary slightly, which gives the layered overtones experienced players prize. They are different instruments. If you want that layered character, go to hand-hammered singing bowls. If you want clarity, ease of play and a design you can see, you are in the right place.

Casting can also do one thing hammering cannot. Raised, three-dimensional relief, such as an embossed Buddha or the Eight Auspicious Symbols standing proud of the surface, is only possible because the design is formed in the mould. That is why the embossed bronze bowls are in this category and nowhere else on the site.

Not every cast bowl is a good one. The pour is never identical twice, and two bowls from the same mould do not sound the same. Some have a dull tone, a pinhole or a rim that will not sing. That is why selection matters as much here as anywhere. A well-chosen cast bowl is a real instrument, and a badly chosen one is the bowl that puts people off.

How your bowl is chosen

Sunita Poudel, our founder, trained at the Golden Temple Singing Bowl & Healing Center in Patan Durbar Square. When your order arrives she plays the bowls of that design and size and chooses yours. She checks:

• A clean fundamental. Steady, not wavering or beating against itself.
• Even rim response. The bowl starts singing from any point on the rim with the same light pressure. This is the most important thing in a first bowl.
• Sustain. The tone should carry, not die in a second or two.
• Casting quality. No pinholes, no thin spots, clean finishing at the rim.
• Crisp relief on embossed bowls, and clean colour on painted ones.

Bowls that do not pass are not sent. Ask and we will record your actual bowl before it ships. That is also why we don't publish stock sound clips.

Notes, chakras and growing into it

Note selection is available on many bowls here. It is not something to worry about for a first bowl, but it becomes useful later. Notes are commonly mapped to the chakras from C at the Root to B at the Crown, though the mapping and playing order depend on the tradition you follow. What is the best singing bowl for a beginner?
