A set is harder to get right than a single bowl, and this is where a healer's judgement matters most. Seven bowls that each sound good alone can still sound wrong together. Every set here is tuned by Sunita Poudel, our founder and a professional sound healer — she sets the target for each bowl and works with the smiths until the seven sit correctly against one another. Sets run from Root (C) to Crown (B) in hand-hammered, hand-beaten, mantra-carved, full moon and antique Thadobati versions, plus colour-finished sets. Musical note, finish and free engraving are available on most, and orders leave Kathmandu within 2–3 days.

Which set is right for what you are doing

This is the question we get asked most, and it is worth answering properly, because the four common uses want genuinely different sets. Tell us which one applies and Sunita tunes to those criteria.

For personal daily practice

You want bowls you will actually reach for. That means a set you can leave out without it taking over the room, light enough to move, and forgiving to play while your technique is still developing. Clarity of tone matters more than volume — you are sitting a metre away, not filling a hall. Hand-beaten and hand-hammered sets in the smaller sizes are the usual choice, and many people start with three or four notes and add the rest over time rather than buying seven at once.

For personal healing and self-treatment

Different requirement. Here you want bowls you can place on or near the body, which means thicker walls and vibration you can feel rather than only hear. Sustain matters more than brightness, because the tone needs to last through a placement. Sunita works with heavier bowls for this and pays particular attention to the lower notes — Root, Sacral and Solar Plexus do the grounding work in self-treatment, and a weak low C undermines the whole set.

For a yoga studio or class

Volume and carry become the priority. A bowl that sounds beautiful in your hands may not reach the back of a room with twenty people breathing. Studio sets need larger bowls with enough projection to be heard over movement and ambient noise, and enough sustain to hold a savasana. Durability matters too — a studio bowl gets handled by many people. If you are opening or closing class with one or two notes rather than running a full sound bath, tell us and we will weight the set accordingly rather than sending seven equal bowls.

For professional and commercial sound healing

The most demanding case, and the one where the tuning has to be right. If you are running paid sessions, your set is an instrument and your clients will hear inconsistency even if they cannot name it. Sunita tunes these sets for interval accuracy across all seven bowls, consistent sustain so no single note drops out of a sequence, and even rim response so you can move around the set without fighting any one bowl. She will also tune to a set you already own — send us the notes and we will tune bowls to sit with them rather than against them.

How a set is tuned

Buying seven bowls is not the same as buying one bowl seven times. A set has to work as an ensemble, and most of what goes wrong with cheap sets is not audible in any single bowl — it only shows up when you play them in sequence.

What Sunita works to when she tunes a set:

• Interval accuracy. The notes have to sit correctly against each other, not just be individually near their target. A set where three bowls are slightly sharp and four slightly flat will sound unsettled no matter how good each bowl is alone.
• Overtones that agree. Every bowl carries upper partials as well as its fundamental. In a good set those partials complement each other; in a poor one they collide and produce a restless beating when two bowls ring together.
• Even sustain across the set. If one bowl decays much faster than the others it drops out of a sequence and breaks the flow of a session.
• Consistent rim response. You should be able to move around the set without changing pressure or technique for one particular bowl.
• A grounded Root. The low C carries the set. A thin or short-sustaining Root bowl weakens everything above it, and it is the most common flaw in mass-assembled sets.

It is the right route if you are adding to bowls you already own, if you want a partial set rather than all seven, if you need a specific size progression for a studio, or if you want the same engraving cut across every bowl. Engraving is free — a studio name, a dedication, or the chakra name and note on each bowl, which practitioners often ask for so a set stays organised during a session.

The seven notes and the chakras

The standard mapping used in Himalayan sound healing runs one note per energy centre, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head:

Two things worth knowing. A hand-hammered bowl is never a single pure pitch — it produces a fundamental wrapped in overtones, so a "C bowl" is a bowl whose fundamental is C, not a tuning fork. And note is linked to size: a low C needs diameter, which is why the Root bowl in any genuine set is the largest one.

Metal sets, not crystal

Worth saying plainly, because people search for both. These are metal bowls — hand-hammered from the traditional seven-metal alloy in Nepal. Crystal chakra sets are made from fused quartz, usually in the United States or China, and they sound quite different: a purer, more sustained single tone with far fewer overtones.

Neither is better. Crystal suits people who want a clean, uncomplicated tone and a visual set. Metal suits people who want the layered, complex sound of a hand-made instrument and the tradition behind it. If it is the Himalayan sound you are after, these are the bowls.
