Tibetan Gong

Tibetan Gong for Sound Healing, Meditation and Sound Baths

A Tibetan gong is the deepest and widest sound in a healing session. Ours are hand-forged in Nepal from a seven-metal alloy, using the traditional forging method. You select the size on each product page, and a mallet is included.

Before your gong leaves Kathmandu, Sunita Poudel, a certified sound healer, checks its sound from her experience in practice.

How to choose a Tibetan gong

For more on the two shapes, read our wind and chau gong guide.

How to play a gong

1. Hang it freely. The gong must not touch a wall or the stand frame, or the sound is cut short.
2. Use the mallet that comes with it. A soft mallet brings out the deep tone without a harsh strike.
3. Wake the gong first. Give it a few very light taps before the first full stroke.
4. Strike just off the centre. Use a relaxed, glancing stroke and let the mallet fall away.
5. Let it ring. Wait for the sound to open before the next stroke. Build slowly.
6. Keep it gentle near people. A gong is loud up close, so play softly when someone is lying nearby.
7. To stop the sound, rest your hand or the mallet head on the face.

Where the gong fits beside singing bowls

Each instrument has its own job in a session. Tingsha open and close it. Singing bowls carry the body of the sound. The bell gives a steady, sustaining tone. The gong is the deepest and widest sound, used in sound baths and for the fullest point of a session. If you already play bowls, a gong is the piece that adds depth. If you are new, Sunita's free singing bowl healing course is a good place to begin.

What Sunita checks when she chooses your gong

Two gongs of the same size and design do not sound the same, because each one is forged by hand. So a gong is not sent out in the order it sits on the shelf. When your order arrives, Sunita checks the sound of the gong chosen for it, from her experience in practice, and it is only packed once she is satisfied. This is the same per-order care she gives to singing bowls.
