Table-Top & Wall-Hanging Prayer Wheel

What is a tabletop prayer wheel?

A tabletop prayer wheel is a Tibetan prayer wheel on its own base or in a small frame. It stands on a shrine, a shelf or a desk and is turned with the fingers.

What is a wall-mounted prayer wheel?

A wall-mounted prayer wheel, also called a wall-hanging prayer wheel, sits in a bracket or frame that fixes to a wall. It is usually placed by a door or along a hallway so it can be turned each time someone passes.

Where should I place a prayer wheel at home?

By custom a prayer wheel is kept in a clean, raised place. A tabletop wheel suits a shrine, a shelf or a desk. A wall-mounted wheel suits an entrance or hallway, at a height where the hand reaches it easily.

Which way do you turn a tabletop or wall-mounted prayer wheel?

Clockwise, as seen from above. This is the traditional direction for all Tibetan prayer wheels.

Do wall-hanging prayer wheels spin?

Yes. They are working prayer wheels. The wheel turns freely on its spindle inside the bracket or frame.

What is a 3 in 1, 5 in 1 or 10 in 1 prayer wheel?

These are multi-wheel sets: several prayer wheels in one frame. They can stand on a table or hang on a wall, and each wheel is turned in passing, in the way rows of wheels are turned at a monastery.

What size should I choose?

For a desk, a shelf or a small shrine, a 5 to 7 inch wheel is enough. For a shrine room, a studio or an entrance, an 8 to 15 inch wheel or a multi-wheel set has more presence.

What is inside these prayer wheels?

By tradition a prayer wheel holds a paper scroll printed many times over with a mantra, most often Om Mani Padme Hum, rolled around the spindle inside the wheel.

Are these prayer wheels handmade in Nepal?

Yes. They are handmade in Nepal in copper, brass and wood.
