Buddha Statues from Nepal: Handmade Buddhist Statues for Shrine and Meditation

Nepal has made Buddhist statues by hand for centuries. Our statues are handmade in Nepal with a gold-gilded finish, and each one represents a figure of the Buddhist tradition: Buddhas, bodhisattvas and one great teacher. This page explains who each figure is, so you can choose the right one for your shrine or meditation space.

Short answer

Choose a Buddha statue by the figure it represents. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha and the usual choice for a first statue. Medicine Buddha is revered as the Buddha of healing, Chenrezig stands for compassion, Manjushree for wisdom and White Tara for compassion and long life. Place the statue on a clean, raised surface and treat it as a devotional image. All our statues are handmade in Nepal.

How to choose a Buddha statue

If you want Choose Reason
A first statue for a home shrine Shakyamuni Buddha The historical Buddha, honoured in every Buddhist tradition.
A figure of compassion Chenrezig or White Tara Both are associated with compassion in the Tibetan tradition.
A figure of wisdom and study Manjushree The bodhisattva of wisdom.
A figure connected with healing practice Medicine Buddha Revered in tradition as the Buddha of healing.
A figure for purification practice Vajrasattva The Buddha associated with purification.
A figure of the Pure Land tradition Amitabha Buddha The Buddha of Infinite Light.
The founding teacher of Tibetan Buddhism Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) Honoured for establishing Buddhism in Tibet.

Finish is the other choice. Most statues are gold gilded, and some are partly gold gilded or painted. Each listing shows the finish and the size.

How to place and care for a Buddha statue

  1. Choose a clean, raised place. A shrine, a shelf or a table set aside for it. By custom a statue is not placed on the floor.
  2. Set it at or above eye level. Measure this from where you sit to meditate or pray.
  3. Keep the space around it clear. Nothing is placed on top of the statue or in front of its face.
  4. Handle it with clean hands. Lift it from the base, not by the arms, crown or any fine detail.
  5. Dust it dry. Use a soft, dry cloth or soft brush. Do not use water or polish on a gilded surface.

Who the statues represent

These descriptions follow Buddhist tradition. A statue is an image for devotion and reflection, and it does not treat or cure anything.

Buddha statues: common questions

Where are your Buddha statues made?

Our statues are handmade in Nepal, which has a long tradition of Buddhist statue making.

Which Buddha statue should I choose?

Choose the figure whose quality you want to keep in front of you. Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha and the most common choice for a first statue. Chenrezig stands for compassion, Manjushree for wisdom, and White Tara for compassion and long life. If you follow a teacher or tradition, choose the figure your practice is centred on.

What is the difference between a Buddha and a bodhisattva?

A Buddha is a fully awakened being, such as Shakyamuni or Amitabha. A bodhisattva, such as Chenrezig or Manjushree, is a being dedicated to the awakening of all others. Both are honoured on Buddhist shrines.

Who is the Medicine Buddha?

The Medicine Buddha is revered in Buddhist tradition as the Buddha of healing. People keep his image and recite his mantra as a devotional practice. A statue is an object of devotion and is not a treatment for any illness.

Who is White Tara?

White Tara is a female figure of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, associated with compassion and long life. She is one of the most loved figures on home shrines.

Where should I place a Buddha statue at home?

By custom a statue is placed on a clean, raised surface, such as a shrine or a shelf, at or above eye level when you are seated. It is not placed on the floor, and nothing is placed on top of it.

Do I need to be Buddhist to keep a Buddha statue?

No. Anyone may keep a statue. It is a devotional image, so it is placed and handled with respect and not used as a casual ornament.

What does gold gilded mean?

Gold gilded means a gold finish has been applied to the surface of the statue. Partly gold gilded means the finish is on selected areas only. Each listing says which finish the statue has.

How do I clean a gilded statue?

Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush. Do not use water, polish or cleaning products on a gilded or painted surface.

How long does dispatch take?

Statues are dispatched in 3-4 business days from Kathmandu by DHL Express.
