Large Standing Singing Bowls

Large Standing Singing Bowls – Big Bowls for Deep, Body-Felt Sound

These are the largest bowls we make, and every one is engraved by hand. Big enough to sit on the floor and be played standing, deep enough that the tone arrives in the body before it registers as sound. Each is hand-hammered in Nepal, carved by a thanka-trained artist over days, then played and approved by a certified sound healer before it ships. How healer selection works.

Large standing Tibetan singing bowls hand-engraved with Buddha, Shree Yantra, Flower of Life and Om designs
Master healing bowls in the Kathmandu workshop. At this size the hammering alone takes a team of smiths several days.

What "standing bowl" means, and what it does not

Worth clearing up, because the phrase gets used two different ways and people arrive here expecting the other one.

A standing bowl in the Himalayan sense is a bowl too large and heavy to hold — it rests on the floor or on a low stand, and you play it standing or kneeling beside it, striking the wall with a padded mallet or working the rim with both hands. The bowls on this page are that kind. They are the largest instruments in a sound healer's kit and the centrepiece of a sound bath.

They are not the enormous vessels you may have seen in videos that a person stands inside. Those are a different object entirely — typically two to three feet across, made to order over weeks, and priced accordingly. If that is what you are looking for, we can have one forged, but it is a commissioned piece rather than something we hold in stock. Talk to us about a commission.

For everything else — sound baths, group sessions, bodywork, temple and studio use, a grounding bowl at the centre of a practice — a floor-standing bowl of this size is what you actually want. It carries across a room, it sustains long enough to hold a savasana, and you can feel it through the floor.

How big is big enough

The honest answer is that size matters less than mass. Two bowls of the same diameter can behave completely differently depending on wall thickness, and for deep work the weight of the bowl is what generates the vibration you feel rather than the width of it.

What changes as a bowl gets larger:

  • The fundamental drops. These bowls sit in the low register, below what a hand-held bowl can reach. That low frequency is what travels through a body and a floor rather than through the air alone.
  • Sustain lengthens dramatically. A large bowl rings for a long time after a single strike, which is what makes it usable as a foundation under other bowls in a sound bath.
  • Technique changes. You cannot hold it. Rim-playing takes more arm and a heavier mallet, and striking needs a padded beater rather than a wooden one. It is a two-handed instrument.
  • The room matters. A bowl this size fills a small room and can overwhelm it. In a large studio it comes into its own.

Tell us the room and the practice and we will tell you honestly whether you need this size or whether a 10 to 12 inch bowl from the handmade collection would serve you better. We would rather sell you the right bowl than the biggest one.

Every one is engraved by hand

This is what separates these from a plain large bowl, and it is the reason they take so long to make. At this diameter the outer surface is a substantial canvas, and every bowl in this collection is carved across the whole of it by a thanka-trained artist working freehand with chisel and hammer. A single bowl can occupy an artist for the better part of a week.

The designs in the collection:

  • Buddha and Buddha Foot — the Buddha figure or the Buddhapada, the sacred footprint, often with a mantra and mandala base or the seven chakras and Shree Yantra worked around it.
  • Chakra Yogi — a seated figure with the seven chakras marked along the spine, in variants with vajra, Ashtamangala or Om and mantra work. The most directly useful design for teaching, because the mapping is visible.
  • Shree Yantra — nine interlocking triangles, the central diagram of Hindu sacred geometry, cut at a scale where the whole structure is legible.
  • Flower of Life and Seed of Life — overlapping circles in six-fold symmetry, usually with a Tibetan mantra surround. The most requested non-denominational choice.
  • Green Tara — the mother of liberation and swift protector, with Tibetan mantras, the Eight Auspicious Symbols and Flower of Life work.
  • Shiva Nataraja — Shiva as lord of the dance, with Shree Yantra and Om mantras. The most intricate figure work we cut.
  • Om — Tibetan Om with mantra etching across the body.
  • Tree of Life with Yin Yang, and Yin Yang with Tibetan mantra and Flower of Life — for practitioners who want sacred geometry without a specific tradition attached.
  • Plain and shining finishes — for anyone who wants the sound without the imagery, including an extra large full moon bowl forged on a full moon night.

The terminology guide explains the symbols in more depth, and there is a smaller-scale version of this work in mantra carved and Om bowls.

One practical note: the carving is done after the bowl is hammered and tuned, so the tone is established before a line is cut. At this scale the deep relief also changes how the mallet travels around the rim — most players find it gives useful grip, but it is a different feel from a smooth bowl and worth knowing before you order.

Why the selection matters more at this size

A flaw in a small bowl is a disappointment. A flaw in a bowl this size, shipped from Nepal, is an expensive problem for both of us. So these get the closest attention of anything we sell.

Sunita Poudel — our founder and a certified sound healer, trained at the Golden Temple Singing Bowl & Healing Center in Patan Durbar Square — plays every large bowl before it leaves. What she checks:

  • A grounded fundamental that is steady and does not beat against itself. Large bowls are more prone to this, because a slight wall inconsistency is amplified by the mass.
  • Long, even sustain. The whole purpose of a bowl this size is that it rings on. A large bowl with a short decay has been made wrong.
  • Rim response all the way round. Harder to achieve at this diameter and more obvious when it fails, because you are moving a mallet a long way.
  • Structural soundness. Heavy bowls carry more stress. A hairline flaw is audible in the decay long before it is visible, and it will spread.
  • Carving quality — consistent line depth across a large surface, no slips, figures correctly proportioned.

Ask and we will record your actual bowl, struck and rim-played, and send you the video before it ships. At this price we would encourage it — and it is why we don't publish stock sound clips.

Hear it before you commit

Tell us which bowl you are considering and we will record that exact piece, struck and rim-played, and send you the video. Usually the same day, and no obligation.

Who these are for

  • Sound healers running sound baths. A large bowl is the foundation the rest of the kit sits on. Start a session with it, return to it, end on it. Nothing else in a set does that job.
  • Yoga studios and retreat centres. One bowl that carries to the back of a full room, holds a savasana, and looks like it belongs at the front of the space rather than in a cupboard.
  • Bodywork and vibrational therapy. Placed near or under a treatment table, the low frequency travels through the floor and the body. This is work a hand-held bowl cannot do.
  • Temples, meditation centres and teaching spaces. The engraved designs are legible from across a room, which matters when the bowl is also a focal object.
  • Practitioners building toward one serious instrument. If you already own a working set of smaller bowls, this is usually the next thing rather than more of the same.

Shipping something this size

A fair question at this weight, and one we would rather answer up front. Large bowls ship from Kathmandu by DHL Express with tracking, the same as everything else, and they are crated rather than boxed — the bowl is wrapped, supported and packed so the rim cannot take a knock in transit, because a dented rim on a bowl this size is not repairable in any meaningful way.

Duties and import taxes are the buyer's responsibility and vary by country; on a consignment of this value they are worth checking before you order rather than after. If you are ordering from outside the usual destinations or want the bowl sent somewhere specific, tell us first and we will confirm what is possible. Full detail is on our delivery information page.

Learning to play a large bowl

Technique is genuinely different at this size, and a large bowl bought without knowing that often gets underused. You will want a heavier padded mallet for striking and a thicker rim mallet with more surface contact, more arm and less wrist, and a slower circuit around the rim than you would use on a hand-held bowl.

Our how to play a singing bowl guide covers the fundamentals, and the free singing bowl healing course goes into session structure, placement and how to build a sound bath around a foundation bowl. Both are free and open to everyone. Mallets and stands are in accessories.

Commissions, studios and trade

Because these are made rather than stocked in depth, we can build to specification: a particular size, note, finish or engraved design, your studio name or logo cut into the bowl, or a matched pair. Lead times are longer than the usual 2–3 days — a large engraved bowl is weeks of work, not days — and we will give you a real date rather than an optimistic one. This is also the route for a genuinely oversized commissioned piece. Start a custom bowl or contact us for trade pricing.

Common questions

What is a large standing singing bowl?
A bowl too large and heavy to hold, which rests on the floor or a low stand and is played standing or kneeling beside it. It produces a low fundamental with very long sustain, and the vibration is felt through the body and the floor rather than only heard.

Can I stand inside these bowls?
No. A bowl you can stand inside is typically two to three feet across and is a commissioned piece made over several weeks. These are floor-standing bowls played from beside them — the largest instruments in a working sound healer's kit. If you want a stand-in bowl, we can have one forged to order; talk to us.

How big is a large standing bowl?
Substantially larger and heavier than any hand-held bowl. Because mass matters more than diameter for deep work, we would rather tell you the actual dimensions and weight of the specific bowl you are considering than quote a range. Ask about any piece and we will send you both.

Do I need a mallet different from my other bowls?
Yes. A heavier padded beater for striking and a thicker rim mallet with more surface contact. A small wooden mallet will not drive a bowl this size properly.

Are these suitable for a beginner?
They can be played by anyone, but the technique is different and the investment is significant. If this is your first bowl, start smaller and add this later. If you already run sessions, this is usually the right next purchase.

Does the engraving affect the sound?
No. The bowl is hammered and tuned first and carved afterwards, so the tone is set before any line is cut. The deep relief does change how a mallet travels around the rim — most players find it helps.

Can I hear the bowl before buying?
Yes, and at this size we would encourage it. Ask and we will record that exact bowl struck and rim-played and send you the video before dispatch.

How is a bowl this size shipped?
Crated rather than boxed, wrapped and supported so the rim is protected, and sent by DHL Express with tracking. Duties and import taxes are the buyer's responsibility and vary by country.

Can you make a custom size or design?
Yes, including oversized commissioned pieces, specific notes, finishes and engraved designs, and studio names cut into the bowl. Lead times are weeks rather than days. Start here.

How do I look after it?
Much as any bowl, though the carved lines hold more dust. See cleansing and charging a Tibetan singing bowl.

Not sure this is the size you need?

Tell us the room, the practice and what bowls you already have, and we will tell you honestly whether a large standing bowl is the right next step or whether something smaller would serve you better.
