Thirty-nine hand-hammered bowls, from 4-inch palm bowls to 13-inch floor-standing pieces, in the classical Himalayan forms — plain Thadobati-style, Lingam, Jhumka, Koprebati and Ultabati — plus thick-walled therapy bowls, handled bowls and hanging chime sets. What "handmade" actually means, and why it changes the sound

The word gets used loosely. On this page it means one thing: a heated disc of seven-metal alloy, worked by a team of smiths over hours, thousands of hammer strikes, with wall thickness judged by hand and ear rather than set by a machine. Nothing here is spun, pressed or cast.

That process is the whole reason these bowls sound the way they do. A machine-pressed bowl has perfectly even walls, so it produces one clean pitch that fades quickly. A hand-hammered bowl has walls that vary by fractions of a millimetre around its circumference, and those variations generate the layered overtones people mean when they talk about the sound of a real Himalayan bowl. It is why two bowls of identical size from the same smith will never sound identical — and why we do not publish a stock recording on each listing. Here is our reasoning on sound clips.

How your bowl is chosen

Most shops photograph a batch, list it, and ship whichever unit is nearest the packing bench. Nobody plays them. We select after you order, not before, and a certified sound healer does the listening. She checks five things:

• A clean fundamental — steady, not wavering or beating against itself. A wobble usually means uneven hammering.
• Overtones that blend — upper partials that sit with the fundamental rather than fighting it.
• Sustain — a slow, even decay. Bowls that die quickly have too thin a wall or too little tin.
• Even rim response — the bowl should start singing from any point on the rim with the same pressure. Flat spots are common and rarely mentioned.
• No cracks or stress lines — heard before they are seen, in the way the tone decays.

Most bowls in this collection are configurable before they are made and selected, which is unusual for hand-hammered work:

• Diameter — palm bowls come in 4, 5 and 6 inch; Koprebati in 6 and 7; the Master Healing head-therapy bowl in 11 to 13. You choose, rather than accepting whatever size the photograph shows.
• Finish — natural, matte, full black, black with golden interior, or tiger eye antique. The same form in the finish you actually want.
• Musical note — pick the note your practice calls for, mapped to the chakras from C at the Root to B at the Crown. See chakra and note information, or measure any bowl yourself with the live singing bowl tuner.
• Engraving, at no extra cost — a name, a date, a mantra, cut by hand by thanka-trained artists. Most shops charge for this or do not offer it.

The forms in this collection

Himalayan bowls are classified by shape, not decoration, and each shape has its own sonic character. Full definitions are in our terminology guide and singing bowl types.

• Classic hand-hammered bowls (7 to 13 inch) — straight-walled, bright and clear with strong high overtones. The everyday meditation bowl and the best starting point.
• Lingam (7 to 10 inch) — a raised protrusion at the centre with a navel beneath. The central mass shifts the overtone pattern and produces an unusually focused, centred tone. Ritually significant and the rarest form we hammer.
• Jhumka (7 to 11 inch) — bell-shaped with deliberately thick walls, built for long sustain and strong physical vibration. The practitioner's choice for bodywork.
• Koprebati (6 and 7 inch) — thicker walls and a distinctive rim profile, giving a warm middle register between Thadobati brightness and Jambati depth.
• Ultabati — deeply curved wall and pronounced inward rim. The deepest bass of any Himalayan form, and the hardest to hammer well.
• Therapy and massage bowls (7 to 11 inch) — hammered heavier throughout so the vibration is felt through the body rather than only heard. A thin bowl of the same diameter will not do this job.
• Master Healing head-therapy bowls (11 to 13 inch) — large, deep and made to be placed around the head. Selectable size and finish.
• Palm size bowls (4, 5 and 6 inch) — bright, quick, easy to hold. Travel, altar work and gifts.
• Handled, chalice and hanging bowls — bowls mounted on a turned wooden handle so they can be played in mid-air, double chalice sets fixed base-to-base, and three-bowl hanging chakra chimes.

Choosing the right size

Diameter is the single biggest factor in both tone and price. Each additional inch lowers the fundamental and lengthens the sustain, because it takes more metal and considerably more hammering.

A bowl on its own teaches you very little, which is why so many end up as ornaments. Common questions

What makes these singing bowls handmade?
Each one is hand-hammered in Nepal from a heated seven-metal disc — thousands of strikes, wall thickness judged by hand. Nothing here is spun, pressed or cast.

Are handmade bowls better than machine-made ones?
For sound healing, yes. Uneven walls generate layered overtones and longer sustain; a machine-pressed bowl gives one clean pitch that fades fast. For a decorative object, the machine-made bowl is fine and cheaper.

Can I choose the size, finish and note?
On most bowls here, yes — all three are selectable on the product page, and personal engraving is free.

Can I hear the bowl before it ships?
Yes. Your bowl is selected individually after you order, so we record that specific bowl and send the video before dispatch. Why we don't publish stock clips.

Do they come with a striker and cushion?
