Every singing bowl here is hand-hammered: shaped from a glowing disc of metal, one hammer blow at a time, by smiths in Nepal. No bowl is spun, pressed or cast to shape. The collection runs from 4-inch palm bowls to 13-inch head-therapy bowls, in the classical Himalayan forms: plain Thadobati-style bowls, Lingam, Jhumka, Koprebati and Ultabati, plus thick-walled therapy bowls, handled bowls and hanging chime sets. Diameter, finish and musical note are selectable on most of them, personal engraving is free, and orders leave Kathmandu within 3–4 business days.

How a singing bowl is hand-hammered

The method has barely changed in generations, and it takes a team rather than one person. This is the sequence our smiths follow in Nepal.

1. The alloy is melted and poured into a small, thick disc. This is the only moment the metal is liquid. The disc is a blank, not a bowl.
2. The disc is heated until it glows. This bronze has to be worked hot. Hammered cold, it cracks.
3. A team of smiths hammers it in turn. One smith holds and turns the hot metal with tongs while the others strike in rhythm. After a few rounds the metal cools and goes back into the fire. This cycle repeats many times.
4. The wall is raised and thinned. The disc becomes a dish, then a bowl. Wall thickness is judged by hand and by the feel of the hammer, not set by a machine.
5. The form is finished. The rim is trued, the base is settled, and the surface is cleaned. Hammer marks are left visible on most bowls.
6. Any decoration is completed. Finish, etching and engraving are done before the sound is judged, so the note is the note of the finished bowl.
7. Only then is the note found. The finished bowl is played and measured. Its note is discovered at this point, not decided in advance.

Why hand-hammering changes the sound

A machine-pressed bowl has perfectly even walls, so it produces one clean pitch that fades quickly. A hand-hammered bowl has walls that vary by fractions of a millimetre around its circumference. Those variations generate several overtones at once, sitting around a steady fundamental, and they give the bowl a longer and more even sustain. That layered tone is what people mean when they describe the sound of a real Himalayan bowl.

It also means a hand-hammered bowl's note is discovered, not made. A smith cannot hammer toward a target note. Two bowls of the same size, from the same smith, on the same day, will not sound the same. Hand-hammered, hand-cast or machine-made

"Handmade" is used loosely, so it helps to separate the three methods. Our guide to singing bowl types covers each in more depth.

• Hand-hammered. Beaten into shape from a heated disc. Visible hammer marks, slightly uneven walls, layered overtones and long sustain. Everything on this page.
• Hand-cast. Poured into a bowl-shaped mould, then finished by hand. Even walls, a smooth surface and a clean, predictable tone. A good first bowl or gift. See hand-casted singing bowls.
• Machine-made. Spun or pressed brass with a decorative finish. A single pitch that dies quickly. We do not sell these.

You can tell a hand-hammered bowl by looking and by playing it. The hammer marks vary in depth and spacing instead of repeating in a pattern, the wall thickness changes subtly as you run a finger around the rim, and the tone carries more than one note at once.

How your bowl is chosen

Most shops photograph a batch, list it, and ship whichever unit is nearest the packing bench. Nobody plays them. We select after you order, not before, and the selection is done by a certified sound healer from her years of using these bowls in practice. She checks five things:

• A clean fundamental. Steady, not wavering or beating against itself. A wobble usually means uneven hammering.
• Overtones that blend. Upper partials that sit with the fundamental and do not fight it.
• Sustain. A slow, even decay. Bowls that die quickly have too thin a wall or too little tin.
• Even rim response. The bowl should start singing from any point on the rim with the same pressure. Flat spots are common and rarely mentioned.
• No cracks or stress lines. A hairline flaw changes how the tone decays before it can be seen.

You choose the specification. Engraving is free.

On most bowls in this collection you set the specification on the product page, and your bowl is then selected to match it. That is unusual for hand-hammered work.

• Diameter. Palm bowls come in 4, 5 and 6 inch, Koprebati in 6 and 7, and the Master Healing head-therapy bowl in 11 to 13. You choose the size instead of accepting the one in the photograph.
• Finish. Natural, matte, full black, black with golden interior, or tiger eye antique.
• Musical note. Choose the note your practice calls for and the healer finds the bowl that carries it. Notes are commonly mapped to the chakras from C at the Root to B at the Crown, though the mapping and playing order depend on the tradition you follow. • Engraving, at no extra cost. A name, a date or a mantra, cut by hand by thanka-trained artists.

The hand-hammered forms in this collection

Himalayan bowls are classified by shape, not decoration, and each shape has its own character. Full definitions are in our terminology guide.

• Classic hand-hammered bowls (7 to 13 inch). Straight-walled, bright and clear, with strong high overtones. The everyday meditation bowl and the best starting point.
• Lingam (7 to 10 inch). A raised protrusion at the centre with a navel beneath. The central mass shifts the overtone pattern and gives an unusually focused, centred tone. Ritually significant, and the rarest form we hammer.
• Jhumka (7 to 11 inch). Bell-shaped with deliberately thick walls, built for long sustain and strong physical vibration. The practitioner's choice for bodywork.
• Koprebati (6 and 7 inch). Thicker walls and a distinctive rim profile, giving a warm middle register between Thadobati brightness and Jambati depth.
• Ultabati. A deeply curved wall and a pronounced inward rim. The deepest bass of any Himalayan form, and the hardest to hammer well.
• Therapy and massage bowls (7 to 11 inch). Hammered heavier throughout so the vibration is felt through the body and not only heard. A thin bowl of the same diameter will not do this job.
• Master Healing head-therapy bowls (11 to 13 inch). Large, deep and made to be placed around the head, with selectable size and finish. For more bowls of this scale, see large standing singing bowls.
• Palm size bowls (4, 5 and 6 inch). Bright, quick and easy to hold. Travel, altar work and gifts.
• Handled, chalice and hanging bowls. Bowls mounted on a turned wooden handle so they can be played in mid-air, double chalice sets fixed base-to-base, and three-bowl hanging chakra chimes.

Choosing the right size

Diameter is the biggest single influence on tone. As a working rule, each additional inch lowers the fundamental and lengthens the sustain, though wall thickness, weight and form matter too.

What is a hand-hammered singing bowl?

Do hand-hammered singing bowls sound better than machine-made bowls?
For meditation and sound healing, yes. The uneven walls generate layered overtones and a longer, more even sustain. A machine-pressed bowl is adequate as a decorative object.

Can a smith hammer a bowl to a specific note?
