Tibetan Tingsha

Tibetan Tingsha: Bells and Chimes for Meditation and Sound Healing

Tingsha are two small cymbals on a cord. Struck together, they give one clear, bright ring that tells a room the session has begun. You may know them as tingsha bells or Tibetan chimes. Ours are cast in bronze by hand in Nepal.

Before your pair leaves Kathmandu, Sunita Poudel, a certified sound healer, checks its sound from her experience in practice.

Pairs of bronze tingsha cymbals from Nepal joined by leather cords
Bronze tingsha from Nepal, checked for sound before dispatch.

Short answer

Tingsha are a pair of small cymbals used to open or close a meditation or sound healing session and to bring attention back. Choose by size first: a 2.5 inch pair is lighter and brighter, and a 3 inch pair has a fuller ring that carries further. Then choose a plain face or a design such as the eight auspicious symbols, a dragon or a mantra. Every pair here is handmade in Nepal and checked for sound by a working healer.

How to choose tingsha

Choice Pick this Reason
Size 2.5 inch Lighter in the hand, with a higher and brighter ring. Easy to carry. Suits personal practice.
Size 2.75 to 3 inch A fuller ring that carries further. Easier to hear in a class or a group session.
Sound One clear ring that fades slowly This is the sound to expect from a good pair. Sunita checks it for each order.
Type Plain A smooth face. Chosen for the sound alone.
Type Embossed Eight auspicious symbols, a dragon, a mantra or zodiac animals. Choose the one that has meaning for your practice.
Type Black bronze The same instrument with a dark finish.

How to play tingsha

  1. Hold the cord, not the metal. Pinch the cord close to each cymbal, one in each hand.
  2. Let them hang freely. Keep your fingers off the cymbals so they can ring.
  3. Bring the edges together. Let the edge of one meet the edge of the other. A light touch is enough.
  4. Let them ring. Hold still and listen until the sound fades.
  5. Ring once, not many times. One clear ring marks a beginning or an end better than a string of them.
  6. To stop the sound, touch the cymbals to your palm or to a cloth.

Where tingsha fit beside singing bowls

Each instrument has its own job in a session. Tingsha open and close it, and bring attention back if the mind has wandered. Singing bowls carry the body of the sound. The bell gives a steady, sustaining tone, and the gong is the deepest and widest sound, kept for the fullest point. Tingsha are the simplest piece to add to a bowl practice. If you are new, Sunita's free singing bowl healing course is a good place to begin.

Not sure which pair fits your practice? Tell Sunita how you practise and who you play for, and she will suggest a size and design.

What is in the tingsha collection

What Sunita checks when she chooses your tingsha

Tingsha are cast by hand, so no two pairs sound quite the same. A pair is not sent out in the order it sits on the shelf. When your order arrives, Sunita checks the sound of the pair chosen for it, from her experience in practice, and it is only packed once she is satisfied. This is the same per-order care she gives to singing bowls.

Tingsha: common questions

What are tingsha?

Tingsha are two small cymbals joined by a cord. You strike them together for one clear, bright ring. In Tibetan Buddhist practice they are used in ritual, and in meditation and sound healing they are used to open or close a session and to bring attention back.

Are tingsha, tingsha bells and Tibetan chimes the same thing?

Yes. Tingsha, tingsha bells, Tibetan chimes, Tibetan cymbals and finger cymbals are different names people use for the same instrument: a pair of small cymbals on a cord.

How do you play tingsha?

Hold the cord close to each cymbal so they hang freely. Bring them together so the edge of one meets the edge of the other, gently, then let them ring. Do not touch the metal while they sound.

What size tingsha should I choose?

A 2.5 inch pair is lighter, with a higher and brighter ring, and is easy to carry. A 3 inch pair has a fuller ring that carries further across a room. For a class or a group session, the larger pair is usually easier to hear.

What do the symbols on tingsha mean?

The symbols come from Himalayan religious art. The eight auspicious symbols, called Ashtamangala, are a traditional Buddhist set of good-fortune signs. Dragons are traditional protective figures. Mantra tingsha carry a sacred phrase. The design is a matter of meaning and taste.

What are your tingsha made of?

Our tingsha are cast in bronze by hand in Nepal, and each pair is joined by a leather cord. The black bronze pair has a dark finish.

Why do the two cymbals sound slightly different?

The two cymbals of a pair are close in pitch but not identical. When they ring together, the small difference gives tingsha their shimmering sound.

How does Sunita choose my tingsha?

Sunita Poudel is a certified sound healer. When your order arrives she checks the sound of the pair chosen for it, from her experience in practice, before it leaves Kathmandu. She does this for each order, the same way she chooses singing bowls.

Can I use tingsha with singing bowls?

Yes. Tingsha open and close a session, and the singing bowls carry the body of the sound in between. Many people ring tingsha once at the start, play their bowls, and ring tingsha once more to finish.

How long does dispatch take?

Tingsha are dispatched in 3-4 business days from Kathmandu by DHL Express.
