How to use a singing bowl in meditation

There are three simple ways, and you can combine them.

• As a bell to begin and end. Strike once to start your sitting and once to close it. The sound marks the time as set apart.
• As the object of attention. Strike the bowl and follow the tone all the way into silence. When it has gone, strike again. Each strike is one cycle of attention.
• As a continuous tone. Play the bowl around the rim and rest in the steady sound. This suits people who find silence difficult at first.

A five-minute practice

1. Sit comfortably with the bowl on your open palm or on its cushion.
2. Take three slow breaths.
3. Strike the outside wall gently with the mallet.
4. Follow the sound until you can no longer hear it. If your mind wanders, come back to the sound.
5. Sit in the silence for a few breaths, then strike again. Repeat five or six times.
