Striking Excites Many Modes at Once

A strike is a single impulse of energy delivered in a fraction of a second. That impulse sets multiple modes vibrating simultaneously — the fundamental and a stack of overtones all sounding together, then decaying at different rates.

What you hear is complex, immediate, and weighted toward the low end because the fundamental carries the most energy. Deep, full, and quickly fading. This is the male tone.

Rubbing Selectively Drives One Mode

Rimming works entirely differently. The mallet grips and releases against the rim hundreds of times a second — a stick-slip cycle that feeds energy in continuously rather than all at once. Research shows this selectively excites the (2,0) fundamental mode and locks the bowl into sustained vibration at that frequency and its harmonics.

Because the energy keeps arriving rather than decaying, the tone builds. And as it builds, the higher partial becomes increasingly prominent until it dominates what you hear. This is why the female tone seems to emerge after the mid-tone, rising out of it rather than starting there.

Where Do the Terms Actually Come From?

Here is something worth stating plainly, because most writing on this implies otherwise.

These gendered labels are not, as far as any available evidence shows, traditional Himalayan terminology. They appear throughout modern Western singing bowl practice and retail. Tibetan and Nepali sources describing these instruments do not use them.

That does not make the distinction false. The acoustic phenomenon is real, measurable, and the terms describe it usefully — a deep foundational tone and a higher rising one. Practitioners use the words because they work, not because a lineage handed them down.

It is worth being accurate about this for the same reason it is worth being accurate about anything: the tradition is interesting enough without borrowed authority. And the genuine Himalayan male-female principle is considerably more substantial than a naming convention for overtones.


The Real Male and Female Pairing: Bell and Dorje

In Vajrayana Buddhism there is an explicit and doctrinally central male-female pairing, and it is not about tones. It is two ritual objects.

The belldrilbu — is female. It represents wisdom, and specifically the realisation of emptiness. It is held in the left hand.

The dorje — vajra — is male. It represents method: skilful means, compassion, the active side of practice. It is held in the right hand.

Neither is used alone in formal practice. Wisdom without method is inert; method without wisdom is blind. Their union is not a metaphor for enlightenment — in Vajrayana terms it is the structure of enlightenment, held in two hands at once.

How to Play Both Tones From One Bowl

Every reasonably sized bowl will give you both. Most people only ever produce one because they only ever use one technique.

  1. For the male tone, strike the outer wall. About two thirds of the way up, with a felt mallet, gently. The deep fundamental arrives immediately and fully.
  2. Listen to it decay completely before doing anything else. The male tone is a single event with a beginning and an end, and rushing past the fade wastes most of it.
  3. For the female tone, move to the rim. Hold the mallet at an angle along the edge rather than pressing straight down. That angle is what favours the higher partial.
  4. Circle slowly and evenly — roughly one revolution every three to four seconds, with steady pressure. The tone will start low and mid-range.
  5. Keep going past the point where it sounds established. The female tone emerges as the bowl warms up, usually after eight to ten revolutions. Most people stop before it arrives.
  6. To move between the two, strike once for the male tone, let it settle, then begin rimming into the space it leaves. The bowl rises from its foundation into its upper voice without a break.

Why Your Bowl Has Sweet Spots

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it changes how you play once you know it.

In a hand-forged bowl, every partial actually has two slightly different frequencies rather than one. Spectrum analysis of a single bowl has measured a fundamental at 334.1 Hz and 335.5 Hz simultaneously; its first overtone at 932.8 Hz and 942.9 Hz; its second at 1742.3 Hz and 1747.7 Hz.

This is called mode splitting, and it happens because hand-hammering leaves the bowl very slightly asymmetric. A perfectly symmetrical bowl would produce one frequency per mode. A hammered one produces two, because the metal is marginally different in different directions.

Those two near-identical frequencies interfere with each other, and the interference is what you hear as the pulse, wobble or shimmer in a good bowl's tone. The wider the gap between the pair, the faster the pulse.

How to Find Them

Because the two frequencies correspond to different orientations of the vibration pattern, you can make either one dominant by striking a specific spot on the rim. Move a quarter-turn around the bowl and the character of the tone changes.

Serious practitioners mark these spots on their bowls — a small dot of paint or a scratch on the base — so they can find them repeatably in a session.

How the Overtones Relate to Each Other

A study analysing seven different bowls found that overtone frequencies sit at near-integer ratios to the fundamental — clustering particularly around three times and six times — but never exactly.

That near-miss is the whole character of the instrument. Exact integer ratios would sound like a musical note: clean, predictable, somewhat sterile. Wildly non-integer ratios would sound clangy, like a dropped saucepan.

Singing bowls sit in between. Close enough to consonance that the ear accepts them as harmonious, offset enough that something in the sound keeps moving. That is why a bowl holds attention in a way a tuning fork does not.


Which Bowls Give Both Tones Clearly?

Not every bowl produces both with equal clarity, and size is the main determinant.

Medium bowls, roughly 15 to 22cm, are the most balanced. Large enough for a substantial struck tone, responsive enough to rim easily into the female tone. If you want to hear both distinctly, this is the range to start in.

Large standing bowls give an exceptional male tone — deep, physically felt, filling a room. The female tone takes longer to build because there is more metal to mobilise, but when it arrives it is powerful.

Small bowls are weighted toward the female tone. Their fundamentals sit high, so the struck tone lacks depth. Bright and clear rather than grounding.

Antique bowls often show the most pronounced mode splitting, because older hand-forging methods left more asymmetry. The pulse in a good antique can be remarkable.
