What to Engrave on a Singing Bowl - Names, Mantras and Dates

Engrave something short that belongs to one person or one day: a name, a date, a mantra, a symbol or a few words. It can go on the outside wall, inside the bowl or under the base. Engraving is free, and the note is checked again after the engraving is cut.

Key takeaways

  • Five things work best: a name, a date, a mantra, a short message or a symbol.
  • Three places: the outside wall, inside the bowl, or under the base.
  • Engraving is free, by hand or by laser.
  • Checked twice: the note is checked before engraving, and again after to confirm it has not changed.

What can you engrave on a singing bowl?

Which mantra should you engrave?

A simple sign such as Om can be cut by hand, while a detailed pattern like the Flower of Life comes out sharpest by laser. The meanings are explained in singing bowl symbols and mantras.

Want mantras and symbols all the way around?

Some bowls come with mantras and symbols already carved, like our Om Mani Padme Hum Potala Gate bowl. Sunita chooses yours after your order arrives.

How do you choose the date?

  • The day itself: a birth, a wedding, a retirement or the first day of your practice.
  • The full moon nearest the day: for a full moon bowl, as explained in full moon date engraving.
  • The month as a word: write 3 April 2026, not 03/04/2026, which reads as March in some countries.

A full moon singing bowl with a date makes a gift for a birth or a wedding.

How much fits on each size?

Three singing bowls of growing size. The palm size bowl carries one name. The medium bowl carries a name and a date. The large bowl carries the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum and a name with a date. Where on the bowl does the engraving go?

One bowl, three places: the outside wall for all to see, the floor inside for your practice, and under the base for a private line.

There are three places for engraving. Tell us in your order which one you would like.

  • Outside wall: shows when the bowl sits on its cushion. The usual place for names, dates, mantras and symbols.
  • Inside the bowl: on the floor of the bowl, seen each time you look in. A mantra or a symbol here meets you at every practice.
  • Under the base: on the bottom, where only the owner will see it. A good place for a private message.

Hand engraving or laser engraving?

Hand engraving is cut by an artisan with hand tools, and its slightly uneven lines match the hammer marks around them. Laser engraving is marked from a typed design, with sharp, even lines that suit small text, longer lines and detailed symbols. Neither is better, so choose by the look you want.

Does engraving change the sound?

Five steps from left to right. Your order arrives with your words. Sunita chooses a bowl and its note is checked. The engraving is cut by hand or by laser. The note is checked again to confirm it has not changed. The bowl is dispatched in 3 to 4 business days by DHL Express. Checked before engraving, and checked again after Your orderyour words, written exactlyBowl chosenSunita checksits noteEngravingcut by handor by laserChecked againnote confirmedunchangedDispatch3–4 business daysby DHL Express
Your words are engraved only after Sunita has chosen your bowl, and the note is checked again before it leaves Kathmandu.

The note comes from the bowl itself: its size, shape and wall. A hand-hammered bowl's note is discovered, not made.

After your order arrives, Sunita chooses a bowl from her experience in practice, and its note is checked. The engraving is then cut, and the note is checked again to confirm it has not changed.

Deep carving all around a bowl is a different matter, explained in does etching change the sound of a singing bowl.

What about a chakra set?

Each bowl in a set can carry its chakra name or its seed mantra, so the order is clear at a glance in a session. Write it in your request in the set builder, or choose a ready set from our chakra singing bowl sets.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Dates in numbers only: write the month as a word.
  • Names from memory: copy them exactly, with capitals, and check the spelling twice.
  • Too many words: small letters on a curved wall are hard to read.
  • A detailed symbol on a small bowl: fine lines need room, so keep a palm size bowl to a simple sign.
  • A mantra you do not know: learn what it means before it is cut into metal.

How do you order an engraved bowl?

  • Choose your bowl: a gift bowl from beginner and gift singing bowls, a full moon bowl or a carved bowl.
  • Write your words exactly as you want them in your order.
  • Sunita chooses your bowl, then it is engraved and checked again.
  • Dispatch is from Kathmandu in 3–4 business days by DHL Express.
  • Add a blessing if you wish: a bowl can be blessed by monks on request.
