Why do some calendars show a different date?
There are two reasons, and neither means a calendar is wrong.
- Time zone: the full moon is one exact moment, and that moment falls on different dates around the world.
- Lunar day: Purnima in the Hindu and Buddhist calendar follows the lunar day, which can be marked a day before the exact moment.
June 2027 is a clear example. The exact full moon is on 19 June, yet many lunar calendars mark Jyeshtha Purnima on 18 June.
Which date should you use?
| What you are doing | Date to use |
|---|---|
| Evening practice | The night the moon is full where you live |
| Observing Purnima | The Purnima day in your local or Nepali calendar |
| Engraving a date | The full moon date at the place where the event happened |
Which full moons matter most in the tradition?
Every Purnima is observed, but two are known far beyond Nepal. Buddha Purnima, on 20 May 2027, is the Vaishakha full moon that tradition links to the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Buddha.
Guru Purnima, on 18 July 2027, is the full moon for honouring teachers.

How do you use these dates for singing bowl practice?
Keep it simple: one short session on each full moon night. Twelve dates a year is an easy rhythm to keep.
- Mark the dates in your phone now, using the Nepal time or your own local time.
- Sit near a window if you can, and play for ten to twenty minutes.
- Follow a routine such as the one in our moon phase singing bowl rituals.
If you do not have a bowl yet, a meditation singing bowl is the usual place to start. For the days between full moons, the 30 day singing bowl routine calendar gives one small step a day.
A different sound on the full moon is widely reported, not measured. We look at that honestly in full moon singing bowl myth and truth.
How do you use these dates for engraving?
Pick the full moon nearest your occasion: a birth, a wedding or a memorial in 2027. Our guide to choosing a full moon date for engraving explains which one fits each occasion.
You can then order the full moon date engraved singing bowl and write the date in your order. Engraving is free, by hand or by laser.
Order early. Bowls are dispatched from Kathmandu in 3-4 business days by DHL Express, and a bowl hammered on a coming full moon takes longer.
What are the common mistakes with full moon dates?
- Trusting one website is risky, because some lists round the date and are a day out.
- Forgetting time zones puts the February, April and September moons on the wrong day for Nepal.
- Mixing two calendars causes confusion when a Purnima day and the exact full moon differ by a day.
- Writing numbers only on an engraving invites mistakes, so write the month as a word.
