How to Tell Which Chakra Needs Attention - And Which Bowl to Start With
Work on the chakra whose theme matches what is on your mind most these days, and start with one bowl in that chakra's note. This is a way of choosing from tradition, not a diagnosis, and if you cannot decide, our short chakra quiz or a universal A or B note bowl will get you started.
Key takeaways
- Choose by theme: each chakra is linked with one area of life.
- One chakra, one bowl is the easiest way to begin.
- Not a diagnosis: no test measures a chakra, and health concerns go to a doctor.
- Cannot decide: take the quiz, or use a universal A or B bowl.
Can you really tell which chakra needs attention?
Not by measuring. No test measures a chakra, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing.
What the tradition gives is a map of themes. The classical sources link each of the seven chakras with its own element, colour and qualities, and you choose the one that fits your life right now.
So read the self check below as a way to pick where to put your attention. It says nothing about your health.
What is the chakra self check?
Read the third column slowly. Stop at the line that sounds most like you this month.
| Chakra | What the tradition links it with | Start here if | Note in the Vedic mapping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Root | Stability and feeling safe | You feel unsettled or not at home in your days | C |
| Sacral | Feeling and creativity | You feel flat, and new ideas do not come | D |
| Solar Plexus | Confidence and will | You put off decisions and doubt yourself | E |
| Heart | Calm, kindness and connection | You feel closed off from people you care about | F |
| Throat | Speaking and being heard | You find it hard to say what you mean | G |
| Third Eye | Clear seeing and focus | Your thinking feels foggy and you cannot see the next step | A |
| Crown | Stillness and meaning | Your mind will not be quiet, even when you rest | B |
Each chakra name in the table opens our guide to that chakra and its bowl. The notes follow the Vedic mapping, and the Tibetan mapping uses the same notes in a different order.
What if two or three lines fit?
- Two fit: choose the lower chakra of the two and start there.
- Many fit: take the singing bowl chakra quiz, which asks a few questions and suggests one chakra and one note.
- None fit: use a universal bowl, as explained below.
Still not sure which chakra?
Our free quiz asks a few short questions and points you to one chakra and one note.
Which bowl do you start with?
Start with one bowl in the note of your chosen chakra. One bowl played often teaches you more than seven bowls played rarely.
| If you want | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One bowl with the note chosen up front | Chakra symbol note selected bowl | You select the note for your chakra when you order |
| One bowl made your way | Custom singing bowl | You choose size and finish, ask for the note, and add free engraving |
| All seven chakras | Chakra singing bowl sets | Sets of 3, 5 and 7, with 9 and 12 made to order |
A hand-hammered bowl's note is discovered, not made. When you ask for a note, Sunita plays the bowls in your size after your order arrives and chooses one from her experience in practice.
What if you cannot decide at all?
Then do not choose a chakra. My training notebook calls A and B the universal bowls, bowls that can be played for anyone and for any chakra.
An A or B note bowl lets you begin today and decide later. The reason these two notes are used this way is that A is the Third Eye and B is the Crown, the two highest centres.
How do you work on one chakra with one bowl?
- Sit quietly with the bowl on your open palm or its cushion.
- Bring your attention to the place of that chakra on the body.
- Strike softly three times, letting each sound fade fully.
- Stay with it for five to ten minutes a day, for one or two weeks.
Then read the self check again. If a different line fits now, move to that chakra.
Why is this not a diagnosis?
Because a chakra is a teaching from tradition, not a part of the body a doctor can examine. The self check uses everyday themes on purpose and leaves physical symptoms out.
A bowl supports relaxation and an attentive state. See a doctor about any physical or mental health concern, and use a bowl alongside proper care, never in place of it.
What are the common mistakes when choosing a chakra?
- Reading symptoms: matching aches and illnesses to chakras, which is a job for a doctor.
- Doing all seven: trying to work on every chakra in the first week.
- Changing daily: picking a new chakra each day and never settling.
- Fixing one chart: assuming every tradition pairs the same note with the same chakra.
- Waiting to be sure: putting off practice until you are certain, when any start is a good start.
What should you do next?
Pick your line from the table, or let the chakra quiz pick for you. How notes and chakras fit together is explained in how frequency, notes and chakras connect.
To learn each chakra in turn, take the free singing bowl healing course. Its second part gives every chakra a lesson of its own.
Frequently asked questions
Which chakra should I work on first?
Start with the chakra whose theme matches what is on your mind most these days. If you cannot decide, take a short quiz or begin with a universal A or B note bowl.
How do I know which chakra is blocked?
There is no test that measures a chakra. In the tradition you choose by theme, such as feeling unsettled for the Root or finding it hard to speak up for the Throat.
Is a chakra self check a diagnosis?
No. It is a way of choosing where to put your attention, based on what the tradition links with each chakra. See a doctor about any physical or mental health concern.
Which singing bowl goes with which chakra?
In the Vedic mapping the notes run C for the Root, D Sacral, E Solar Plexus, F Heart, G Throat, A Third Eye and B Crown. The Tibetan mapping uses the same notes in a different order.
Can I work on more than one chakra?
Yes, but begin with one for a week or two. One chakra and one bowl is easier to keep up than seven.
What if two chakras seem to fit?
Choose the lower of the two and start there. You can move to the other one after a couple of weeks.
Do I need a full chakra set to begin?
No. One bowl in the note of your chosen chakra is enough to start, and you can add bowls later.
Ready to work with all seven?
See our chakra singing bowl sets. Each set is put together by selection after your order arrives, and a mallet and cushion come with every bowl.
